Some people collect baseball cards or Star Wars action figures; I collect nineteenth century fashion plates.
A fashion plate, in the original sense of the word, is an illustration of predicted future fashions, which were generally published in magazines and journals. Although, fashion plates were printed in the late eighteenth century and early twentieth century, this blog is primarily interested in fashion plates from the nineteenth century.
The goals of this blog are:
To provide access to 19th century fashion plates: Fashion plates are intricate, beautiful, and in the public domain. Therefore, everyone should have access to these images, even if it is solely electronic.
Educational: The study of fashion plates could be useful to scholars of a variety of disciplines - fashion history, women’s studies, social history, art, etc. – and also to writers of historical fiction. In cases where I have the fashion commentary that goes along with the plate, I will provide it here.
As Little White Gloves is a private fashion plate collection, belonging to a collector of limited funds, this blog won’t ever provide a through representation or history of nineteenth century fashion plates.
